It has been reported that the 2022 Ballon d’Or will be awarded to Karim Benzema of Real Madrid. This is following the news that the 2020 edition of the award was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, and that the 2021 award will go to Lionel Messi of Barcelona.
This is obviously a huge coup for Benzema, who has been one of the most consistent performers in the world over the last few years. He will become only the second French player to win the award, after Michel Platini in 1983 and 1998.
Benzema will be looking to continue his good form into the new season and help Real Madrid defend their La Liga title. He will also be hoping to lead France to success at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
